Notes on Function Maturity
Generally speaking, mature use of cognitive functions involves learning how to accept the influence of a function’s oppositional counterpart - Si and Ne; Ni and Se; Ti and Fe; Fi and Te. This encourages healthy psychological balance between the introverted and extraverted sides of the personality.
Immature Si: I only want details that make me comfortable while ignoring or downplaying important details that might require me to change course
Mature Si: I prepare myself to perform well by methodically learning and attending to every new significant detail and adding it to my knowledge baseImmature Ne: My mind is unable to conceptualize the best ideas or grasp the most promising opportunities for making progress
Mature Ne: I am confident in making continual progress because I can conceptualize many viable paths to approach any situation or difficult problemImmature Ni: I believe I know what the world really is but can’t live in it because I am only able to perceive lack, imperfection, negation, or emptiness
Mature Ni: I have a strong sense of purpose because I possess a positive and meaningful vision of what I should bring/add to the worldImmature Se: I merely react as circumstances dictate without much thought about whether it is the best course of action
Mature Se: I know to appreciate new or unexpected experiences because they are opportunities to gain knowledge and enhance my adaptabilityImmature Ti: I follow my own rules and principles without any understanding of how my existence fits into the world at large
Mature Ti: I want knowledge that is accurate and precise so that I solve problems effectively and act without harm, bias, or hypocrisyImmature Fe: I only care about others in terms of how they affect me and fail to treat them as individuals with their own unique needs/experiences
Mature Fe: I approach people objectively, as separate from myself, and respond to my and their needs appropriately, fairly, and compassionatelyImmature Fi: I can only see as far as my own experience and suffering and cannot reconcile what’s happening in the world at large
Mature Fi: I use my depth of human experience to be a person of integrity and alleviate suffering in the world at largeImmature Te: I utilize power to change the world into what I want it to be and fail to realize that my actions do not produce universally positive results
Mature Te: I utilize my strengths to solve the world’s problems and work to correct my mistakes so as to minimize negative results**These “notes” are meant to be supplementary to the Type Development Guide (see: mbti-notes.tumblr.com/development). Without enough knowledge of cognitive function theory and function misuse, you may not fully understand what the notes mean.
